Sex
Sexual display is a central theme related to the bed, none less
than Sarah Lucas’s work. Matthew Collings (2002) suggests that Sarah Lucas’s work is body orientated and says he thinks the references to sex, "very funny, although they aren’t exactly jokes…… behind the humour is a common denominator of what it is to be human." Lucas has a concern for sex, death, war, gender, love and God which is reflected in Au Natural (1994) and Spinster 2002 reminding us that the bed is not always a comfortable place. Though her work is uncomfortable there are no answers to any of our questions. ‘It is just laid out in front of us,’ (Coles in Dziewior 2005), and though Lucas does not use stitch, her work has delicate quilted patterns on the mattresses. In contrast to Sherman, there is awareness of the absence of form but the artefacts are carefully arranged.
